How Much Can a U Haul Load Weigh?

The max weight of any given load that a U Haul can hold is 3,880 lbs. This is the maximum weight. Therefore, it is nothing for it to carry 2,000 pounds or more. A U Haul can obviously hold a ton of weight, literally.

What If My Load is Over the Weight Limit?

If your load is over the weight limit, this means you have a ton of stuff. You may have to split your load if it is too heavy. Maybe you can take the heaviest items to the new location first and then bring your other stuff.

How Much Weight Can a U Haul Truck Hold

Depending on how heavy your heaviest items are, you may have to split up the heavy items as well but this usually is not the case. If for some reason, you believe your appliances and other heavy items are too heavy and will push you over the maximum weight limit.

If you aren’t sure how to go about this then I would just take away some things and split the load to make sure and be certain your load doesn’t reach the max limit.

How to Tell If I’m Loading Too Much Into the U Haul?

As far as knowing how heavy your load is, I don’t think there is a true way to tell. It would be really cool if the U Haul had a scale on it to weigh each load but it doesn’t. So you are going to have to play the guessing game in a way.

Should I Split My Load into Two

If you have a lot of really heavy things like let’s say you are moving several refrigerators, several stoves, and several washers and dryers, you can almost be certain that you are going to go over the maximum load limit.

One other way to tell if you are loading too much into the U Haul is based on sight. If the U Haul looks full then it probably is. Again, a U Haul can hold a lot of things and you won’t reach the maximum weight limit all that fast.

However, you do have to make an educated guess about when enough is enough. If you have filled the U Haul to the top or nearly to the door, then you need to stop and not add anything else because it may go over the weight limit.

Is There A Way to Measure the Weight of a U Haul Load?

Not that I know of. I know of no way to measure a U Haul load. There may be one or two options.

One option is to get the weight of all your things or at least the biggest and heaviest things. You may be able to find the weight of some of your items on the website where you purchased them from or in the manual for the product. On the other hand, you may have a large scale and place your items on there one at a time.

Then you’ll take the weight of each item and add it up altogether. By doing that, you’ll be able to at least get a good estimate of how much your total load weighs. Other than that, I know no other way to weigh everything that is in your load.

When you drive a U Haul truck you will likely have to stop at a weigh station and they’ll be able to tell you then if your load is too heavy. But you really shouldn’t wait and let it go this far. You should work on figuring out if your load has reached the max limit before ever pulling off with it.

Should I Split My Load into Two?

Yes, you should definitely split your load in two or even three if you suspect you have too much. If you think your load is going to cross the 3,880 lb threshold then I wouldn’t try to load it all at once. It is better and safer to split the load rather than take a gamble and be driving with a load that is past the loading limit.

I’m not sure what will happen if you cross the maximum weight limit but I can assure you it won’t be good. It could put pressure on the tires and cause them to explode or go flat. It could cause other serious damage to the truck or even lead to a serious wreck.

Regardless of if something horrible could happen or not, you still shouldn’t take that chance or risk. By following the rules and guidelines, you can make sure that you and everyone around you are safe because your U Haul truck is not over the weight limit.

If you aren’t sure and it is bothering you, contact U Haul and maybe they can help.
