This is a small issue but can be very confusing if you have never driven one before.
A U-haul is very different from your ordinary car or van, so it can be complicated to figure out how to do everything init. If you are having trouble turning off the light, keep reading.
How Do I Turn Off the Light in U-Haul?
- If that isn’t the issue, you can look for the dome light switch, this is usually located along the door rim or where it connects to thevan.
- If there is no button that is being jammed it may be located in the door latch.
You can find this latch and insert something inside, such as a small tool or pen. If you hear a click, this means that you have most likely unjammed the dome light switch.
This switch can easily become jammed, especially if it is located around the door, which is opened and closed frequently. This can permanently press the dome switch down, causing the light not to shut off.
If none of these options worked for you, you should call the U-Haul place you rented to to report the issue. They will want to do a full vehicle overview to figure out what is happening.
Cabin Light Won’t Turn Off
Many users asked me how to turn off the cabin light in a U-Haul. The dome light/cab light knob is on the left side of the steering wheel.

Turn The Light On in a U-Haul
Driving at night is dangerous.
If you want to turn on the inside light, you can locate the dimmer switch on the left side of the steering wheel.
This should be a little switch that you can move to brighten, dim, or turn on the dome light.
Some vans may even have a touch dome light that you can quickly push to turn on. This will keep it on until you touch it again to turn it off.
If you want the dome light on indefinitely, you can turn the dimmer switch to the dome light to have it turn on without switching off. This will give you the light, until you want to turn it off again.
This can be very useful if you unpack your van at night or need to find something in the driver or passenger seat.
Just make sure you turn it off before leaving.
Turn Off The Tow Light
To turn off the tow lights, you can do so by locating the Tow/Haul button. This bottom should be on the steering column to your right.
The button will usually be right on the top, and you only have to push it in. This will activate the Tow/Haul action, which will automatically turn on the tow lights.
To turn the lights off and on, all you need to do is press that button or stop and remove the key from the van.
Both options should turn off the tow light automatically.
You may need to call support if you notice any issue with the U-haul tow light not shutting off. It’s necessary to inform them so that the vehicle can undergo an inspection for any problems when it’s returned.
U-Haul Trailer LED Lights
The company does not clearly state in its policy if all of its vans have LED lights or not. It does say that a LED light trailer module 39008 will work if the trailer you are using has LED lights.
So, it is safe to assume that some trailers come with LED lights. LED lights are preferred as they are brighter and require less technical wiring. They are also more dependable.
Can You Tow a U-Haul Without Lights?
Most laws require that any towing van be equipped with several functioning lights. This includes stop, turn, and running lights that are all functioning.
These are the required lights as they help other drivers to see you. Without these necessary lights, drivers may be unable to spot you on the road in the dark, resulting in a car accident.
The company is responsible for ensuring all of these lights work before renting out the U-haul. But it is still up to you to make sure that you check these lights before you start driving.
Even though it is their responsibility, it is still essential to be a safe driver. You never know when a broken or damaged light could have been missed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Sleep in a U-Haul Cargo Area?
Renters are not supposed to use the cargo area as sleeping quarters as they are not made for that purpose. U-Haul clearly states that doing so could put yourself at great personal risk.
Sleeping in a cargo area could put you at risk of not getting enough oxygen or breathing in exhaust fumes. Shifting cargo can also cause serious injuries if you are laying in the back.
This is a dangerous thing to do, and no one should risk it. It is safe to sleep in the cabin area.
As long as the u-haul is turned off and the doors are securely locked.
But drivers should never consider sleeping in the cargo area as it is far too risky and it is not designed for that purpose. No one should sit back there while the driver is driving either.
Doing so is incredibly dangerous and is completely prohibited by U-Haul.
How Big is the Inside of a U-Haul Truck?
The interior dimensions of a U-haul truck are 7’10 x 5’2 x 1’9, and the dimensions of a cargo van are 9’6 x 5’7 x 4’8. This includes the interior length, height, and width.
These dimensions will, of course, be slightly different depending on the size of truck or cargo van that you rent. That is why you will want to calculate your own measurements before renting a U-haul.
You will be responsible for choosing the correct size of vehicle for what you intend to use it for.
