What Happens If I Don’t Leave a DoorDash Tip?

It is completely up to you whether you decide to leave a DoorDash tip or not. It is suggested but not required by DoorDash’s policies.

If you do not want to leave a tip for the DoorDash driver, that is perfectly fine, according to DoorDash.

DoorDash recommends that all customers leave at least a $2 tip, but it is not required. If you choose not to leave a tip, there will be no consequences from DoorDash.

The thing to keep in mind is that drivers can see tips, therefore they can see when you have not left a tip. This can greatly discourage them from taking on your order.

Because Dashers are independent contractors and not DoorDash employees, they can turn down orders if they like. This means that no tip might mean that no driver cares to take your order.

This is the biggest reason why many DoorDash customers choose to leave even a small tip. Because orders with no tips very regularly get left and don’t end up getting to the customer.

Is Tipping Mandatory on DoorDash?

Many customers and drivers have this question about tipping. It is not mandatory, however it is highly appreciated.

You can add the tip later. If you add the tip late, then tip amount will be in addition to your food bill. Tips are currently being used to encourage people to do a better job.

Tips are not forced, they are not required. Consider it a gift for good service.

Will My Order be Picked Up Without a Tip?

If you do not leave any tip at all, there is a very good chance that no Dasher will pick up your order. This is because it is not realistic for them to do so.

Drivers rely greatly on tips to help boost their hourly pay as well as cover their gas expenses. So deliveries that do not tip will seem more like a waste of time than anything else.

You may be able to get away with leaving no tip if you live in a small area with few orders and short driving times. Or if a driver decides to take an order if they are coming in slow.

Otherwise, most Dashers will not bother to deliver an order that does not have even the recommended tip.

How Much Should a DoorDash Tip Be?

Generally, the best practice for tipping on DoorDash is to give 20% of the total order amount. So if your order was $20, you would leave a $2 tip.

This is recommended by DoorDash, but many Dashers say otherwise. Many have admitted that they would still not bother to pick up an order if it had a 20% tip. Because it still doesn’t provide a very large tip.

Unless you are ordering a couple hundred dollars worth of food, the tip will still be quite small. Many Dashers prefer tips around $8 to $15 instead.

Depending on the distance and the amount of time an order takes is what usually finalizes the driver’s decision. They need every hour to count, and that means that every order they take must be a profitable one.

The best way to guarantee that your order will be picked up in a timely fashion is to tip as well as you can. This could mean tipping as low as $5 to as high as $15. These kinds of tips are what will get your order delivered to you quickly.

What Will Happen If I Don’t Tip on DoorDash?

Because DoorDash does not require its customers to leave tips, nothing bad will happen to you if you decide to not leave one. It is perfectly in your right to do so if you don’t want to leave a tip.

But it is important to keep in mind that this will affect whether or not your order is accepted by a driver. DoorDash will not force a driver to take your order, they have the opportunity to choose an order or decline it.

DoorDash drivers can also see what the tip is like before they take on an order. So, if there is no tip at all, they just might pass up on your order altogether.

Many Dashers rely quite heavily on tips, which is why they are such a big deal. Dashers barely get paid minimum wage, so they have to make up for their income somewhere else.

They also use tips to cover their gas expenses as DoorDash does not pay for its driver’s gas, or any other expenses.

These are just a few things to keep in mind the next time you place an order through DoorDash. An inconvenient as it is to leave tips to drivers, it could be the difference between getting your order or not getting it.

It is also the kind thing to do and shows that you appreciate the deliverer’s work in getting your food to you.

  3. Absolutely we can see tips! It’s basic math. I’m never more than 50 cents off accurately figuring out rhe tip before I accept an order.. if it’s not 1.50 to 2.00 a mile then that a nope. On to the next! It’s a waste of time of and money. Regardless it’s a service. You decided to be lazy not myself so walk, run, drive, or tip! I can calculate your tip basted on base and promo. So I hope you like cold food or non at all! Shameless people that don’t have to open a door to look you in the face. Grow up!
